Aphids can go from a handful of insects to a plant-covering colony in less than a week — but they are one of the most controllable garden pests you will encounter. A combination of a hard water spray, insecticidal soap, and a few smart planting choices will eliminate an active infestation and keep it from returning.

If you have found clusters of small, soft-bodied insects on your vegetable plants — often along new stem growth, on curling leaves, or coating the undersides of foliage — you are dealing with aphids.
